One of the things I love most about Melbourne (and there’s a lot!) is the laneways weaving amongst it’s central business district – unless you knew they were there you could walk past every day and have no idea of the colourful street art just metres away.
Melbourne graffiti really took off in the 70’s and 80’s when the street art movements in New York and the UK started influencing Melbourne’s bored youths, and shortly after stencil art and other graffiti started popping up in the city’s laneways and along the tram and train lines. In fact, Melbourne was one of the first places for stencil art to be seen after it was first started in London, and since then street art has gone from strength to strength in the city – Even Banksy has left his stamp there, although sadly this has since been covered up by a non-street art savvy graffiti cleaner.
Personally, I think all street art should be protected, and even encouraged…it’s what adds character and culture to grey city walls, and for me, Melbourne wouldn’t be Melbourne without it.
