The World’s Best Christmas Markets

Who doesn’t love Christmas? I mean, as if  a big fat guy dressed in a red furry suit who brings you presents isn’t enough, but we also get to shop, eat and drink to our hearts content and not feel one bit guilty about it – after all, it’s the holidays!

Growing up in Australia I never really had an appreciation for the Christmas Market which is traditionally all about rugging up in the snow and drinking cups of warming mulled wine – the lead up to the day for me often consisted of the beach, sun and some backyard cricket, so I’ve loved having the chance to live in the Northern Hemisphere and get amongst everything that the North Pole stands for.

Here are some of the best Christmas markets from around the world, for everyone escaping the heat and enjoying a chilly one this year!

Vienna Wiener Christkindlmarkt – I visited last year and it was one of the most beautiful markets I’ve ever seen – fairy lights and lit up trees and buildings for as far as the eye can see!

Munich Christkindlmarkt – The original and some say the best, these markets have been running for decades and can get pretty jam-packed. A must visit for anyone in Europe though for the sweet treats alone!

New York Columbus Circle Holiday Market – Home Alone, Miracle on 34th Street and Elf – NYC doesn’t get much more Christmassy! Come here for the carols and food.

Sapporo German Christmas Market You don’t normally associate Japan with Christmas, but this relative newcomer to the Christmas Market scene is already a favourite around the world for its mulled wine and original setting.

Prague Vanocni TrhyTaking place all across the Czech capital, the Prague markets are the place to go on a budget and for unique gifts and treats.

  3. I highly recommend the Budapest Christmas market, and the highly underrated Zurich one. The highlight is a giant christmas tree decorate with thousands of crystals.

Hi Denise, thanks – that one almost made the list, I may have to add it now! : )

  5. In my opinion even the smallest town in the world has a wonderful Christmas market, because this is the spirit of the holiday and it is the same everywhere – full of joy and happiness!
