Would You Try A Competitive Sporting Holiday?

Sporting Holidays

Last weekend I travelled to Brighton on the south coast of the UK where I completed my first ever marathon in just over five hours. The sun was shining, the crowds were cheering and apart from my legs all but self-combusting at the finish line, I had a completely fun and unique travel experience – different to any that I’ve ever had before. Don’t get me wrong, I’m very active during the trips that I do – I love to walk, hike and swim, but as far as going somewhere to specifically compete in an event, well, I was a newbie. But there was something about being away from home, the rush of competing in a race and exploring a new city that has definitely made me think a lot more about doing it again.

For me, travel is all about the experience of new things – people, places and feelings. I like to feel like I’m learning something or bettering myself when I’m on the road, and I always search for something that will push me out of my comfort zone and provide me with a new angle or way of looking at things.

This was exactly what running the marathon did for me, in a way it felt like a double hit of happiness – not only was I travelling but I was pushing my mind and body to its absolute limits in the process, and it felt pretty amazing. This may have just been my dehydrated brain talking nonsense to me at the 21 mile mark, but I realised that professional athletes and seasoned travellers probably have a lot in common – they both have a passion to which they’re committed, both continually push themselves out of their comfort zone, and both want to learn something about themselves in the process.  And further to this, I think that people who love to travel are probably pretty well suited to indulging in some competitive sport every now and then, and similarly athletes are pretty well travelled too when you think about it.

I’m not saying a marathon is for everyone, but since having this truly unique travel experience I would urge all the travellers, nomads and couch-surfers out there to consider signing up for an event abroad – pick somewhere you’ve never been before and take in all the anticipation of the competition along with the excitement of adding a new city to your ‘visited’ list. You never know, you might find a new passion, and at the very least you’ll see a new place and get a double endorphin rush in the process – something that us travellers will never take for granted.
